First Time Uploading of a Web Site by WS_FTP

Ipswitch WS_FTP LE (Limited Edition) is one of the most widely used FTP software. Here, we describe how to upload your web pages to your web site http://www.mydomain.com by using WS_FTP Version 5.08 2000.02.23. Description here only applies to Alfa-1 Associates clients. To see the pictures related with each step, click on Step X hyperlinks or on the thumbnail pictures.

Let's assume that domain name of your web site is mydomain.com; and, your user name is given as "username" and password is given as "password" by Alfa-1 Associates.

Step 1 Open your WS_FTP program. Session Properties window of WS_FTP program will pop up. You will do following on General tab of the Session Properties window. Hit "New" button and start to fill empty text boxes for the first time uploading. Fill the "Profile Name" box by any name that you want to give for this new web site. Here, we typed "My Web Site." Type "www.mydomain.com" to Host Name/Address box. Leave host type as "Automatic detect". Type "username" to User ID box. Type your password to password box.

Step 2 Go to "Startup" tab of the Session Properties window. Type "/web" to "Initial Remote Site Folder" text box. Leave other text boxes empty. Hit "Apply" button. By hitting "Apply" button, your profile for uploading to www.mydomain.com is saved into your WS_FTP program. By this way, you will not need to type all of these set ups again, when you want to upload web pages to your web site next time. Then, hit "OK" button. This will connect your computer to your web site.

Step 3 Your WS_FTP program will be showing folders and files on your computer on Local System window and the files of your web site on the web server on Remote Site window. Make sure that your Local System window points the folder on your computer where you have your web pages that will be uploaded to www.mydomain.com. You can find further details about uploading your web site within the "Help" files of your WS_FTP program or on http://www.ipswitch.com web site.
